DIPLOMA COURSE

THE AIM OF THIS COURSE IS

  • to give a comprehensive academic and practical training to men and women who wish to become fully competent catechists.

THE COURSE

The Course consists of 24 work papers, which are worked at home, in the student's own time and using books as required.

The Final Examination is worked under the same conditions as the previous papers at home in the student's own time and using books as required, but it is assessed by an Independent Examiner.  The Course also requires that a year's practical teaching be completed to the satisfaction of the student's Parish Priest and certified as such by him.  The practical work may be done concurrently with the course.

The Course can be completed in two years, but full allowance is made for personal circumstances and family commitments.  Students from many different walks of life can obtain this Diploma.  What is required, however, is a love of the Faith, a desire to pass on their love and knowledge and an ability to undertake the study involved.

EXPENSE

  • Enrolment Fee + Part 1:  £25

  • Part 2:  £15

  • Part 3:  £10

Students also pay postage on work papers sent to them by enclosing two stamped self-addressed envelopes each time they return completed work.  Please ensure the value of the stamps is correct.

TEXTBOOKS

  • The new Jerusalem Bible (standard edition) £35.00 OR (study edition with notes) £19.95

  • The Council Documents of Vatican II Vol. 1 and Vol. 2

  • Catechism of the Catholic Church

Students are recommended to buy these books, if they don't already have them, as they will be wanted for future reference.  Other books will be recommended for reading during the course, and these can generally be borrowed from libraries.

Textbooks are available from:

Our Lady's Bookshop

Postage on books is free if this Course is quoted on ordering

PROCEDURE

When an application is received, a set of model answers is sent to the prospective student. These indicate the standard to be achieved at the end of the Course.

If the student decides to take the Course, a cheque for £25 should be sent to the Registrar, who will send the first work paper by return.

All cheques should be made payable to CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE - OLC

When this work paper is completed and returned to the Registrar, the student will be allocated to a tutor, who will correct and return it.  Meanwh8le the second paper is sent, and so on.  It would be helpful to tutors if students would send, with the first work paper, a brief account of their lives and circumstances.

A full report on the student's course work is sent to the examiner with the final paper, and this is taken into consideration in deciding the overall result.

Students are urged to attend Our Lady's Catechists' Annual Conference and Study Days, to meet tutors and fellow students.

THE DIPLOMA

On successful completion of the course work and final examination, and on receipt of a certificate from the Parish Priest stating satisfaction with the practical teaching, the student is awarded the Diploma.  This is recognised by the Hierarchy of England and Wales and is signed by the Bishop of the Diocese in which the student resides.

It will be appreciated that, as our Lady's Catechists is responsible to the Hierarchy, the standard of the Course is high.  It is under the general supervision of the Director of Studies, Rev. Harry Curtis, BA, B.Ed., S.T.L.

MEMBERSHIP

On being awarded the Diploma, students become members of Our Lady's Catechists and are expected to offer their services to their Parish Priests.  There is no subscription.  A Newsletter is issued annually, free of charge to members, who are entitled to attend the Annual Conference and other meetings as arranged.

All work and correspondence is sent via the COURSE REGISTRAR:
