FOUNDATION COURSE

THE AIMS OF THIS COURSE ARE TO 

  • to train men and women to become Parish Catechists and to achieve this, all parts of the course must be completed.

  • to provide a postal course for adults wishing to develop their knowledge and understanding of the teachings
    of the Church.  For this purpose, Parts 1, 2 and 3 are appropriate

THE COURSE

  • Part 1:   DOCTRINE The Catechism of the Catholic Church

  • Part 2a: SCRIPTURE AND LITURGY in the Old Testament

  • Part 2b: SCRIPTURE AND LITURGY in the New Testament

  • Part 3:   LIFE IN CHRIST
                 Moral Issues: Catechism of the Catholic Church
                 Veritatis Splendor (Papal Encyclical)

Some students end their study at this point and will receive a completion certificate, but those who wish to train Parish Catechists go on to:

  • Part 4:  PRACTICAL WORK: SOWING THE SEED
                Creative Catechist (Manternach & Pfeifer)
                General Director for Catechesis
                Students must also have a copy of the New Jerusalem Bible
                Study Edition, and Sunday Missal.

The Fee for Parts 1,2 and 3 is £30.00  (This will include Course notes on Doctrine, Scripture and Moral Issues.)  There is an additional fee of £5 for Part 4.  Students will pay postage on work papers to and from their tutor.

SUPERVISION

The Course is under the general supervision of the Director of Studies, Rev. Harry Curtis, M.Ed, B.Sc., STL

  • Each student is assigned to a tutor.  Students are encouraged to attend the OLC Annual Conference and Study Day, to meet tutors and fellow students.

CERTIFICATION 

The full course can be completed in two years but full allowance is made for personal circumstances. 

At the end of Part 3, the student wishing to qualify as a catechist will be assessed, partly on Course and partly on an externally assessed review paper written at home under the same conditions as the Course units.

Part 4 will be assessed on written papers and practical work to be arranged by the student and approved by the Parish Priest or his delegate.

On successful completion of the Course, assessment and practical work, the student will be awarded a Certificate, signed b y the Bishop of the Student's Diocese, the Chairman of OLC and the Director of Studies, which qualifies the successful student as a Parish Catechist.

MEMBERSHIP

On being awarded the Certificate, students become members of Our Lady's Catechists and are expected to offer their services to their parish priest.

There is no subscription.

A Newsletter is issued annually, free of charge, to Members, who are entitled to attend the Annual Conference and other Meetings as arranged.
